The Daily Egyptian has been selected for the Student Media Sustainability Project, a pilot program funded by the Scripps Howard Fund that aims to strengthen and preserve independent collegiate media organizations.
The project is led by Barbara Allen, founder and director of CollegeJournalism.org and the College Journalism Newsletter. Allen announced in the May 3, 2026 newsletter that three groups were selected out of nearly 40 applicants. In addition to the DE, Central Michigan Life of Central Michigan University and The Student Life of Claremont Colleges will join the program.

“This inaugural year is a pilot that will hopefully provide options, insight, help and actionable steps for any student media organization struggling with or concerned about sustainability,” Allen wrote in the newsletter. “
The project is focused on three pillars: audience, revenue and governance. As a participant, the DE will receive training and coaching from media professionals, as well as work with consultants to set measurable goals, launch new revenue ideas, improve audience engagement and sustain editorial independence.
The program will take place during the 2026-2027 academic year.
