Stix to close, Levels plans reopening

By Emily Cooper, Editor in Chief

Stix, a local bar that has been open since the 1980s, is set to close on Aug. 10.

A farewell party has been set up on Facebook for Aug. 9 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., at the bar to commemorate the closing of a Carbondale staple and reopening of the future of Carbondale.

“It’s more about the city’s 11.75 percent sales tax, and favoritism to certain businesses that really drove me away,” Greg Knoob, sole member manager of the LLC, said. “Stix was doing very well, and I’m sure I could have found a buyer, but I really just didn’t want to waste my time with the city any longer.”

Knoob said the closure was kind of last minute.

“I have been gone more than I have been in Illinois for months, and it was stretching me pretty thin,” he said.

However, Levels is reopening full time, Knoob said.

“It is in the process of transferring to one of my LLCs,” Knoob said. “It is currently owned by my son. I have the staff and managers in place there that can handle it. By combining the Stix and Levels staff and management, it will be enough.”
