SIU sophomore second baseman Maddy Vermejan earned her first honor of the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

The honor marks the third time this season that a Saluki has been recognized as Player of the Week.

In last week’s doubleheader at Missouri State, Vermejan finished 4-6 with a run scored, a walk and one RBI.

She turned in another big series against Bradley over the weekend.

In the three games in Peoria, Vermejan scored eight runs and knocked in seven RBI in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, tying the school record for RBI in a single game. She also swatted two home runs in that game.

On Sunday, the sophomore collected a double and an inside the park homer to go along with two more RBI, ending her week with a .556 batting average and 10 RBI.

Vermejan is now hitting at a .376 clip with five homers and 26 RBI, second-most on the Saluki squad.

The Salukis will be back in action this weekend with a series against the Purple Aces in Evansville.
