Preston Barrett practices different forms of karate Wednesday at the Shotokan Karate Dojo on South Illinois Avenue. Barrett started karate in the SIU Karate Club in 1973 and became the instructor of the club in 1976, which he taught for 25 years. Barrett has been the instructor of the Dojo, meaning place of training, for 13 years. “Traditional karate and one form of martial arts is taught here,” Barrett said. “Karate offers the people a way to exercise and stimulate their mind and their body to grow.” Children and adults are welcome and private classes for individuals are available.
