Saluki swimmers claim six events at Butler Invite

The Saluki men and women’s swimming team fared well at the Butler Invite on Jan. 21 in Indianapolis.

On the ninth anniversary of the Butler Invite, the Salukis claimed six event victories.

The SIU men scored 494 points, good for third in the competition. The Saluki women scored 356 points and finished fourth.

On the men’s side, junior Chris Cole won the 1,650-yard freestyle event with a season-best time of 15:54.52. Senior Michael Wolfe was right behind in second, while sophomore Kevin Kluge took third in the event.

Wolfe claimed the 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.49, while Cole finished second.

Sophomore Tamaj Hajtman won the 50-yard freestyle with a 21.39 time.

In the men’s 200-yard medley, freshman Sam Drew placed second with a time of 1:56.28. Drew also came in third in the 100-yard breaststroke.

In the men’s 200-yard freestyle, junior Reilly Garman finished second in 1:43.73.

On the women’s side, senior Bryn Handley claimed the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:20.53.

Junior Jordan Ries won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.79 for her first win in the event of the season.

Junior Jess Peck won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.01, also good for her first win of the season.

The Saluki women continue competition this Saturday at 11 a.m when they host rival Indiana State.
