Horned Frogs sweep Salukis in opening series

SIU baseball came up empty-handed in its trip to Fort Worth, Texas, this weekend.

The Salukis (0-3) played the No. 2 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs (3-0) and was swept in the series.

“I think we learned a lot about our club,” coach Ken Henderson said. “[TCU] is just a tough club. I think it will benefit us in the long run.”

Friday, the Dawgs lost 5-0.

TCU senior Preston Morrison earned the win. SIU senior Aaron Hauge suffered the loss.

Hauge finished with 5 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and 3 hits.

“I expected that from him,” Henderson said. “He gave us a chance to win. You’re not going to score a lot of runs on these guys.”

Morrison finished with 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 strikeouts, 2 walks and 3 hits.

Saluki sophomore catcher and outfielder Jake Hand and freshman designated hitter Logan Blackfan finished 2-for-3 to lead the team.

TCU junior outfielder Dane Steinhagen also finished 2-for-3 and recorded 2 stolen bases to lead the Horned Frogs.

Saturday, the Dawgs lost 16-4.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Pruemer got the loss in his first collegiate start. Pruemer was a late-inning relief pitcher last season. He gave up 7 earned runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 IP.

TCU sophomore right-handed pitcher Brian Howard earned the win. Howard gave up 1 run in two innings in relief. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander made the start but only pitched four innings, making him ineligible for the win.

Saluki freshman designated hitter Hunter Anderson recorded two of the team’s 10 hits. He finished 2-for-5 and 1 run scored.

Horned Frogs senior infielder Keaton Jones led all hitters, going 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Sunday, the Dawgs lost 11-0.

Junior Alex Lesiak made his first start for the Salukis and suffered the loss. He gave up 7 runs, six of which were earned, in 2.1 innings on 4 hits and 3 walks.

TCU junior Alex Young made the start for the Horned Frogs and earned the win. Young held the Salukis scoreless on 3 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in 4 innings pitched.

Horned Frogs senior infielder Derek Odell went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Two other TCU players recorded 2 hits. No Salukis had more than 1 hit.

The Salukis play the Austin Peay State Governors (2-0) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Clarksville, Tenn.
