Southern Football Arena ‘Named’; It’s Now McAndrew Stadium

Official approval of the State Teachers College Board was given this wek to a proposal of Southern Illinois University to name its stadium “McAndrew stadium” in honor of the late William McAndrew, who served for many years as chairman of the physical education department and as director of athletics at the University.

Mr. McAndrew devoted nearly three decades of his life to the development of athletics in Illinois. He was one of the founders of the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Association and at one time served as its president. He was serving as secrfetary at the time of his deahth in 1943. McAndrew joined the Southern staff as director of athletics in 1913 and served continuously excepot for the period 1917 to 1920, during the war years and while he was completing his law degree at Vincennes. Southern’s stadium has been informally known as McAndrew Stadium for a number of years.
