Outlook for New Board is Optimistic

By Gus Bode

A seperate board of directors for Southern on a two-year trial basis is almost a certainty.

The House committee on education is scheduled to make its report to the House today on its decision to permit a seperate board for Southern on a two-year trial basis.

The subcommittee of the House committee on education, after considerable deliberation and conferences with Governor Adlai Stevenson, followed in part the governor’s suggestion that the board be permitted for a two year trial. In the meantime a study will be made concerning the possibilities of setting up an over-all program for all the state’s tax-supported colleges and universities.

Reject U. of I. Proposal

Sen. R. G. Crisenberry (R.- Murphysboro) originally introduced a bill to the Senate which would provide for a permanent separate board for Southern. It passed the Senate successfully but was pigeonholed in the sub-committee for further study.

The sub-committee accepted Crisenberry’s proposal in preference to a bill by Rep. Ora D. Dillavou (R-Urbana), which would place Southern under the University of Illinois board of trustees.

At present Southern is under jurisdiction of the state teachers college board, with the directors of state Department of Registration and Education serving as ex-officio chairman.
