Loose (Flaming) lips sink ships

By Gus Bode

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne does not want rock stars to act like rock stars.

At least that is what his comments in a recent Rolling Stone article would lead you to believe.

Coyne got a little bit testy when indie rock superstars Arcade Fire came up in the interview, calling them ‘pricks.’ Coyne said when the Lips had played some shows with the band they just treated everyone around them like excrement, including their crew and the audience.

‘People treat Arcade Fire like they’re the greatest thing ever and they get away with it,’ Coyne said in the article. ‘Those sort of opinions change my view of their music.’

Well if Coyne wants musicians to be these super peaceful, rainbows and sunshine people all the time, what is he doing talking serious trash about some of his contemporaries? Some musicians are pompous; it is just a fact. Surely Coyne has been around the landscape long enough to realize this.

Also, why should an artists’ demeanor affect whether you like their music? If they treat a stagehand like crap or if they wear fur coats should not be a deciding factor in digging their tunes.

It seems as if there might be a little jealousy in Coyne’s comments as his band has fallen off the radar in the past couple of years.

If one good thing comes out of this trash talking, hopefully it is a series of scathing diss tracks between Coyne’s crew and the Arcade Fire. I’m sure Mick Boogie would gladly host Coyne’s mixtape.
