Luke Eaton, a senior from Carterville studying business management, paddles toward the finish line of the 43rd Annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta on Saturday at the Carbondale Reservoir at Evergreen Park. Eaton, who competed in the event when he was a kid, said he used the same design this year that won the category the last time he competed. “I like the fact that [the boat regatta] gives the people of Carbondale a chance to use their creativity to build a boat and set sail,” Eaton said. “It gives local high schools the chance to kind of do something they wouldn’t normally do in a school setting and get creative.” Eaton took first place in the category. — April 30, 2016, Carbondale, Ill.
