The Salukis went on the road to take on the Drake Bulldogs this April 2-3. The Salukis wound up winning two of the three games, the first and third being the victories.

In the first game, Southern Illinois started out hot, scoring two at the top of the first inning. The Bulldogs answered with one at the bottom of the first.

After the first inning, both teams went into a stalemate. Neither team managed to score until the sixth inning when the Dawgs secured their victory.

SIU put up six points on Drake to push their lead to 8-2. This would inevitably end up being the final score, helping the Salukis steal game one.

The second game of the series also took place on Saturday, where Drake managed to come out on top, 5-4.

The first inning went exactly the same, SIU scored two, and Drake scored one. But this time, there wasn’t much of a stalemate. SIU put up two at the top of the third, but Drake came back with three to even the score at 4-4.

After a scoreless fourth, Drake scored one point at the bottom of the fifth to gain the lead. SIU wasn’t able to score again, leaving the victory to the Bulldogs.

In the third game, Southern Illinois hoped to right the ship. A win in Des Moines, IA would be crucial for the Salukis to get back on track.

SIU opened the game scoring four runs in the first two innings, two-a-piece. Drake could not answer to help slow down the run.

It took the Bulldogs all the way until the bottom of the sixth to hope for a victory. They went on to score four runs to tie the game at 4-4. Little did they know what the Salukis had coming.

The Dawgs came out at the top of the seventh looking to dominate Drake, and dominate they did. SIU went on to score nine runs in the final inning to push their lead to 13-4. Drake only put up one in the final inning, so the Salukis won the game 13-5.

During this weekend, senior Jenny Jansen became SIU’s all-time hit leader with 224 this Saturday. She passed Jen Felmeier’s former record, 223, which had been held since 1997.

The Salukis play their next game against Saint Louis University on Wednesday, April 6. The game will take place at home at Charlotte West Stadium
