SIU Swim performs well in busy weekend after COVID cancellations

The first meet took place on Friday, Jan 21, at Arkansas Little Rock. This was the final tri-meet of the season, as Arkansas at Little Rock also hosted Henderson State.

The SIU men’s team destroyed Henderson State 184-78, while the women’s team beat both Little Rock and Henderson State. The women’s team defeated Little Rock 171-87, and Henderson State 212-47.

Freshman shined for the SIU women’s team, as freshman Apryl Paquette won the 1000 m freestyle, with a time of 10:35:22. Freshman swimmer Celia Pulido won both the 100 and 200 m backstroke with times of 54.59 and 1:57.59.

Sophomore Fernanda Sanchez also won their fourth-200 m freestyle of the season. She finished with a time of 1:55:15.

Junior Max Ransom won the 200 m fly with a time of 1:57.21, junior Terry Yang won the 1000 m freestyle with 10:03.75 on the clock and sophomore Gustav Perrson won both the 100 and 200 m breaststroke.

The second meet was a womens-only meet, where the Salukis faced off against the Sycamores of Indiana State. This meet took place at SIU Carbondale where the Salukis managed to defend their home pool 185-115.

For the divers, freshman Farida Moussa and senior Laura Mircea competed well, placing first in the one and three meter dives respectively.

Senior swimmer Eden Girloanta won the 1000 m freestyle, and Sanchez won two more in Saturday’s meet. She clocked first in both the 500 m free and 400 m IM.

Both teams will compete next for their senior night on Friday, Jan. 28 against Eastern Illinois. The meet will take place at 4 p.m. at Carbondale.
