Northern Iowa beats Southern Illinois Volleyball as the Salukis drop another close match

The Salukis (5-14; MVC 0-6) battled the Panthers (7-12; MVC; 2-4) in Davies Gym where they lost in five sets. This was the second conference game of the weekend for SIU. 

The Salukis had a rough start to the game,losing the first two sets. The first they lost 25-18, the second losing 25-17.  

The Salukis managed to gain confidence in the third set. Southern Illinois righted the ship, and won this set 25-15.

SIU kept up the pace in the fourth set, where they jumped out to another big lead. Despite a late spurt by Northern Iowa, the Salukis finished the job winning 25-23. 

The final set started close, but the Panthers jumped out to a 6-point lead. The Panthers rode this momentum to a 15-11 victory. 

SIU junior Nataly Garcia and UNI sophomore Emily Holterhaus led the game with 19 kills. Salukis’ freshman setter Anna Jaworski had 48 assists, which was good enough to lead both teams. 

Northern Iowa junior Carly Spies totalled 11 blocks in the Panthers’ victory. SIU senior Katy Kluge helped the Salukis with 19 digs on the night. 

The Salukis play their next game Saturday, Oct. 11 at Indiana State at 5 pm.
