The SIU swim team travelled to Lone Star Lake, in Douglas County Kansas, where the University of Kansas hosted the CSCAA Open Water Championship. The SIU Men’s team placed 5th, while the Women’s team placed 4th.

Four distance swimmers from each team were selected to compete in the invitational. Each swimmer participates in a 5000-meter swim over open water.

For the women, senior swimmer Eden Girloanta led the way finishing 3rd individually with a time of 1:04.29.9. Sophomores Mariana Sanchez and Fernanda Sanchez finished 24th and 30th, with Mariana leading the way. Freshman Ana Tonda came in at 56th for the Salukis.

The Men’s team was headlined by junior Ian Marshall who finished 12th, with a time of 1:02.48.4. Sophomore Ben Rutledge followed closely, finishing 15th in the race.

Sophomore Austin Kinsler and junior Sam Flessner helped the team by finishing 20th and 26th respectively to get the men’s team to 47 points. Which was good enough for the team to place 5th.

SIU’s swim team competes next on October 1-2, where they travel to Springfield, Missouri. The event is hosted by Missouri State.
