The Saluki men’s golf team finished in ninth out of 13 teams in the three day Craft Farms Intercollegiate Tournament that ran from March 28-30.

Topping the individual leaderboards and leading the way for SIU in Gulf Shores, Ala., was junior Matthis Besard.

After day two of the event, Besard found himself in third place, and after shooting for par in the final round, Besard was able to pass up freshman Ty Gingerich from Cincinnati.

Cincinnati was the team that placed first overall in the tournament with Gingerich and junior Joe McCarthy finishing in a tie for second place.

The win by Besard was the second individual title he has won, with his last coming in 2018 at the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational which was also his first collegiate tournament.

Southern as a whole finished ninth in the tournament, with a total score of 890, just one shot behind conference foe Illinois State.

Freshman Justin Wingerter came in a tie for 19th place in the tournament with a total score of 220 as the next highest finish for the Salukis.

Up next for SIU is the Murray State Racer Invitational in Murray, Ky., April 4-6.
