Drake takes the Salukis down in three sets

By Ryan Scott, Sports Reporter

SIU volleyball (2-15,1-14 MVC) fell to the Drake Bulldogs (11-5,9-4 MVC) on Sunday March 21 in three sets.

Sophomore opposite hitter Haley Bush led the Bulldogs and the game in kills with 16. The Salukis got eight from both redshirt senior opposite hitter Emma Baalman and redshirt junior outside hitter Hannah Becker.

The first set was even between both teams early on as the teams were tied at 14. Drake was able to get the lead up to 24-21. A Kill by Bush on the first set point closed out the first set at 25-21.

SIU got the first point in the second set on a kill from redshirt senior outside hitter Savannah Sheridan. That would end up being the only time the Salukis led in the second set as Drake quickly ran off four straight points.

SIU trailed 16-10 before getting three straight points, but they couldn’t get the deficit closer than three as Drake closed out the set on a 9-4 run. A kill by senior middle blocker Gillian Gergen closed out the second by a score of 25-17.

In the third set SIU led 9-7 but the Bulldogs scored six straight points taking a four point lead that SIU wasn’t able to overcome. Drake took the final set 25-15.

SIU will play Monday March 22 against Drake again in the final game of that series. After that SIU will return home from Des Moines next week for their last series of the season.
