Teen killed by vehicle on U.S. Highway 51

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office announced that a pedestrian had been fatally struck by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 51, near Fox Road on Nov. 29 at 6:08 p.m.

The pedestrian was identified as 18-year-old Elijah White of Carbondale, who was transported from the scene to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and died shortly after, according to the release.

The release said White had been struck while attempting to flag down an oncoming car for help with his vehicle.

White was hit by a red 1998 Chevrolet truck going southbound. The driver has since been identified as Mt. Vernon resident Mark Buller. 

It was not disclosed in the release whether or not Buller sustained any injuries in the collision.

According to the release, the incident is being investigated by a Traffic Crash Reconstructionist from the sheriff’s office.
