By George Wiebe, Staff Reporter

According to the Jackson County Health Department new cases of COVID-19 have risen over 1100% in the last 6 weeks.

More than half a million confirmed cases have been recorded in the state of Illinois alone.

The CDC says the sharp rise in cases can be attributed to the cold weather forcing more people indoors, where the virus is more easily spread.

“Please protect yourself, your family, and your community,” The Jackson County  Health Department wrote in a statement on Facebook asking residents to wear masks, social distance limit gatherings, and get tested if showing symptoms.

These symptoms include fever, coughing, difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle aches, loss of taste or smell, nausea or diarrhea.
