Saluki family loses basketball legend

Saluki basketball’s all-time leader in points and hall of famer, Charles “Chico” Vaughn died today at the age of 73 after losing his battle with cancer.

Milton Vaughn said his brother enjoyed life.

“He was my brother, he’s always been my hero,” Milton Vaughn said.

Charles “Chico” Vaughn wore number 20 for the Salukis from 1959-1962. Vaughn is the all-time leader in points at SIU with 2,088. He is also the Illinois High School Association all-time leader in points with 3,358 in his high school career.

Milton Vaughn, said besides Charles Vaughn’s career in basketball, his other passion was education.

“He loved the kids, he loved working with the kids,” he said.

Vaughn played high school basketball at Tamms High School from 1954-1958. He played five seasons in the NBA with the St. Louis Hawks and the Detroit Pistons and moved on to the ABA in 1967. Vaughn won the 1968 ABA Championship as a member of the Pittsburgh Pipers. During his time at SIU, Vaughn was a two-time league MVP.
