Nutrition and exercise collide in student center

By Brent Meske

Those who have a break on Tuesdays can go to the Student Center to burn calories and eat a nutritious lunch.

Lunchtime Bowl and Burn started Sept. 9 and continues from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m in the Student Center bowling alley each Tuesday. The program offers a game of bowling and lunch for $6.50. Just the game is $2.50.

A nutritionist will be present each week to answer questions students may have, said Beth Alongi, marketing assistant director for the Student Center.

“[The Student Center] wanted a program to give students, faculty and staff an outlet in the middle of the day to have a nutritious lunch if you choose and burn some calories and then bowl a game,” Alongi said.

She said bowling for an hour burns 115 calories.

Dawn Null, wellness coordinator at the Student Health and Wellness Center, is the nutritionist involved with the program. She said bowling is not an intense workout, but is a workout nonetheless.

Null is able to give nutrition facts, dieting tips and answer questions. She worked with dietitians at the Wellness Center to develop a healthy lunch, which includes a yogurt, granola bar, cheese stick and vegetables with dip.

“Inside the lunch are items selected by the nutritionist at the health center, so it goes along with what we’re doing with the program,” Bill Null, the bowling and billiards recreation manager said.

The Student Center, Recreation Center and Student Health Center are collaborating to put this program together.

“We try to cross-promote our programs, and this seemed like a good fit between the Student Center and Health Center,” Dawn Null said.

Alongi said there was just one person the first week, and four Tuesday. Although the numbers are low, Alongi said word of mouth will help it grow.

“When someone comes over on their lunch hour, they have a good time and a little bit of exercise, word of mouth will help get the program going,” she said.
