Revisions made to dog ordinance

By Gus Bode

Six revisions made to the existing dog ordinance passed unanimously at the City Council meeting Tuesday after a recent increase in the classification of dangerous dogs.

Members of the city council approved changes to be made to Title Three of the Carbondale Revised Code relating to animals. Of the original 13 revisions, six were passed. The changes will apply to dogs classified as dangerous by Carbondale Chief of Police Bob Ledbetter.

“Some of (the proposed revisions) were legally shady and practically impossible,” Councilman Chris Wissmann said.

The six revisions are as follows:

1. Once a dog is considered dangerous, the owner must provide proof of liability insurance amounting to $5,000.

2. The licensing fee for dogs that are not spayed or neutered will be raised. If a dog that is classified as dangerous is not spayed or neutered, the owner has 14 days to do so.

3. Once the dog is released to the owner after being classified as dangerous, the owner must place a microchip in the dog.

4. Tethering of all dogs that are classified as dangerous is prohibited.

5. Any dog that is classified as dangerous or vicious has to be listed with the city and available for viewing to the public.

6. Owner will be convicted of a felony if the dog is classified as dangerous or vicious.
