According to Eric Spencer, vice president of Image Architect Inc., which did the initial design for Trueblood Dining Hall, the magazine receives around 120 entries for various categories including remodeling, libraries, buildings and cafeterias. Between 50 and 60 of those are awarded.

He said probably the most attractive part of the cafeteria to the judges was the cost per square foot.

“It really shows that you don’t have to spend a lot to get a lot in return,” he said.

Beth Scally, director of marketing and conferencing for University Housing, said the award shows the hard work and dedication of the architects and contractors.

“It’s very exciting that they can be recognized,” she said. “They’ve worked very hard.”

Spencer said the new design features a colorful dcor an urban feeling. He said he dining hall seemed minimalist and brutal when the designers first began.

They started with the acoustics, which were felt to be the most negative aspect of the dining hall, and branched from there. In the end, interpersonal space was introduced with lighting, providing a more personal aspect to Trueblood Dining Hall.

“We worked with basic design and made decision around function goals,” he said. “As we worked through it all, the room was defined naturally. Once this happened, everything falls together.”

Although the remodeling was basically a re-design of the interior, Spencer said he believes students will notice the change.

“We hope the people in cafeteria before appreciate difference,” he said. “But those who weren’t won’t understand the difference.”

Spencer said Image Design Inc. plans to submit the Grinnell remodeling, which was completed in August, for publication next year.

“It’s a good game plan and we think it will do well,” he said.
