Dean, a student in SIU’s Head Start program, and Alexandra Spillman, a student in the physician assistant program from Effingham, look at an X-ray of Curious George during a doll clinic March 8, 2017, at the Head Start center in Carbondale. Adam Guss, a student in the physician assistant program from Milan, said the kids pretend their dolls are their own children when they come to the clinic. “It just brings kids to light about making them more comfortable coming into the doctor’s office,” Guss said. “Seeing their dolls, or babies as we call them, be more comfortable then it makes them more comfortable coming into see us.” This is the fifth year for the doll clinic. Benjamin Puffer, hand on candle, and Josh Schenkenfelder, a senior from Oak Forest studying journalism, work to craft a display of candles that reads Alex K in memory of Alex Kierstead — an SIU student who died in a house fire the day before Thanksgiving — on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, outside the burnt home in Carbondale. Puffer, a freshman from Carbondale studying physics, met Kierstead through a mutual friend. He was a really good guy, Puffer said. Hes just really cool. He had a really good soul. Its one of the best things. Kierstead, a junior from Aurora studying political science and journalism, was remembered by a few dozen friends and mourners at the candlelight vigil held outside the burnt building at 700 W. Kiefer is 87 years old and has worked at the local dry cleaners since she was 18. When she started she wanted to help her husband with building their home in De Soto. “We’d order a load of lumber and we’d get that paid for and we’d order another load of lumber until we got our house built,” she said. Kiefer still lives in the same house her husband built. She said she likes working so she continued doing it. “I just like it and people seem to like me,” Kiefer said. “They expect me to be out there if they come.
