Greg Belk, of Carbondale, helps his 7-year-old son, Wyatt, secure his helmet before his therapeutic horse riding lesson Saturday at Giant City Stables. Wyatt, who suffers from ADHD, has been attending the lessons for two months. Greg said Wyatt’s concentration and focus have improved. “Before we started this he’d have frequent outbursts,” he said. “Now those have pretty much ceased.” Giant City Stables’ therapeutic riding program is offered to people with a range of physical, emotional, cognitive and social disabilities. “Right now all of our funding comes from the fundraisers we do,” said Patricia Nardini, president of Specialized Equine Services and Therapeutic Riding. “We used to get some funding from the state but with Illinois’ budget crisis, everything’s on hold.” — May 21, 2016, Makanda, Ill.
