SIU Department of Public Safety releases alert on possible sexual assault

The SIU Carbondale Department of Public Safety (DPS) sent out an alert Sunday afternoon concerning a possible sexual assault on campus.

Students received notification of the report through email and text message, as required by the “Clery Act” –  a consumer protection law that aims to provide transparency around campus crime policy and statistics.

DPS received a Campus Security Authority report on the possible incident, which occurred in Bowyer Hall, according to the message. The report was made on Sunday and the victim and suspect are reported to be acquaintances, as well as both students.

According to the email, the university is investigating the incident and encourages members of the campus community to focus on crime prevention and awareness and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
