Saluki Men’s Golf opens season in Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –  Saluki men’s golf competed in their first tournament of their spring season teeing off at the Gator Invitational.

The field Southern faced in their first appearance in the invitational consisted of Coastal Carolina, Florida, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville, Liberty, Michigan, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Florida, Princeton, University of Central Florida, University of Southern Florida, Vanderbilt and West Virginia.

SIU finished in last among the tough field in their first action as a team since the fall with a team score of 886 finishing just three shots shy of Princeton at 883.

Vanderbilt was first in the invitational finishing with a score of 839 across the three rounds played on Saturday and Sunday.

Salukis freshman Matthis Besard led the pack finishing tied for 23rd with a score of 213, following behind him were seniors Peyton Wilhoit and Luke Gannon who finished tied for 60th and tied for 71 respectively.

Senior Hunter York and freshman Vikar Jonasson rounded out the rest of the Southern squad, York finishing tied for 75th and Jonasson finishing in 81st.

The Salukis will be back in action this weekend February 22nd through the 24th at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California.
