Sophomore catcher Katelyn Massa was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career, the league announced Monday.

At the Gamecock Invitational over the weekend, Massa finished with three home runs, nine RBI and a grand slam. She batted .455 during the tournament.

This season, she is batting .348 with 11 RBI and a league-high four home runs with only one strikeout.

In the first game against Mercer, Massa began the first inning with a solo home run. Later, she hit an RBI double that gave SIU the 6-1 lead.

The game against Georgetown is where the sophomore catcher truly shined, hitting a two-run home run in the first inning. Massa followed with a grand slam blast in the second inning that gave Southern the 6-0 lead over the Hoyas.

In the final game of the weekend against Michigan State, Massa recorded another RBI double for the Salukis’ only run of the game.

With such a hot bat, the Salukis look to continue to rely on Massa’s offense as they head to Fort Myers, Florida to compete in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament.
