SIU volleyball has its longest winning streak of the season heading into conference play.

The Salukis (5-6) defeated the University of Tennessee-Martin (5-6) in three sets Tuesday night for the last midweek match of the season. SIU held the Skyhawks to a .126 hitting percentage, which led to its second straight win.

“It’s one of those good streaks you want to be on,” coach Justin Ingram said. “We’re still in the beginning stage of our season and closing out what is the first segment of the season.”

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Andrea Estrada led the team with 12 kills and a .579 hitting percentage.

“Our block was so much better Tuesday than our last match against Marshall,” Estrada said. “It was important tonight as always, but it was so important [Tuesday] because we were focused on the fast set.”

Sophomore hitter McKenzie Dorris recorded six of the Salukis 10 team blocks.

“I think we’re far more physical [than UT-Martin],” Ingram said. “Much better than a block solo is a block assist, because that means that two people were there and not just one.”

Dorris said she was happy the midweek matches are completed because she can balance her schedule for the rest of the season.

“These midweek matches really take a toll on you because you’re traveling for so long,” Dorris said. “We get back late and we obviously have school the next day. Now that these are over we’ll definitely be able to focus more in class and in practices.”

The Salukis play Evansville University at 7 p.m., Friday at Davies Gym. They finish non-conference play against Southeast Missouri State University at 2 p.m., Sunday on the road.
