The back wall of the classroom run by Marla Martin, Rebound’s adult basic education reading instructor, is covered with images of Martin with Rebound graduates and thank-you cards handwritten by her former students. Martin, a native of Herrin, has been teaching at Carbondale Community High School’s Rebound program for 15 years. She said she primarily helps students struggling with reading and writing pass the GED examination and earn their high school diplomas. “It is the most fulfilling job,” Martin said. “I can’t imagine anything being more fulfilling than seeing the success of these students who have to overcome so many barriers in order to achieve their education.” — April 27, 2016, Carbondale, Ill.
