President’s Day is cause for school closures across the nation but for SIU students, Monday’s cancellations is a product of heavy snowfall expected to hit southern Illinois.

University spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith said classes are cancelled at the Carbondale and SIU-Edwardsville campuses. The Student Health Center and Rainbow’s End Child Development Center will not be open, and the Saluki Express will not run.

The Student Center will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the scheduled President’s Day open house will adhere to its original schedule, Goldsmith said.

The Recreation Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and university housing dining halls will continue with normal operating hours.

Goldsmith said the Parking Division will still give tickets to those parked in restricted, disabled or reserved spots but it will not administer decal-based citations.

As of Sunday night, she could not confirm hours for Morris Library.

“That’s what we know as of right now,” Goldsmith said. “We’re trying to piece it together.”

Delays are expected for delivery of Daily Egyptian’s Monday newspapers.
