Liberal thinkers may have racist views-student

By Gus Bode

Hidden racism can be found in everyone including those defining themselves as extremely liberal, according to an SIUC student who conducted a survey of racism on campus for a project in a performance art class.

Carolyn Briggs, a senior in speech communication and theater from Chicago, said her performance, Am I a Racist? The Deconstructing of a White Girl, reflects on her unawareness of her own racism and others’ through the use of the survey.

I was reading an article in a magazine about well-meaning people that believe and act as if they aren’t racist but really are, Briggs said. I remember (the article) gave the example of a well-meaning white woman that has a black doctor and makes sure she tells all her friends what a great doctor he is and yet she has a black housekeeper but she doesn’t mention that at all.
