Sutphen said a confined space is defined as any place that is not normally occupied or that is a hazardous environment.

Manis used the heating and cooling tunnels under campus as an example of confined space.

Sutphen said along with all of the regular rescue tasks, every time there is a confined space rescue, the oxygen level, carbon monoxide level, lower explosive limit and hydrogen sulfite (a poison) level must be checked.

The team was practicing high-angle rescues at McAndrew Stadium on Wednesday and is planning to practice it again at Giant City today.
