SIUC students may no longer have to roam the streets aimlessly looking for parties because of a new phone line service one University student is planning to create.
August 27, 1995
Party Central, a brainstorm of Kevin Casey, would give students a chance to advertise their parties for $10 through a phone number to notify potential party-goers of party locations.
The phone service would consist of two lines. One is for the students to call to find out where the parties are and one line is for party-throwers to call to give the details of their party, Casey, a senior in marketing from Schaumburg, said.
The Party Central line is in the planning now but will hopefully be available by this weekend, Casey said.

As soon as I can get enough people that are interested in advertising their parties, I’ll start advertising the phone number party-goers call to find out where to go, Casey said. Hopefully (the party line) will start Thursday.
The reason I’m starting Party Central is to kick start the party scene which has been in decline the past few years.
Some SIUC students said they are concerned about the police finding out about the parties through the phone line.
I’d avoid the parties on the party line, Chad Parker, a senior in art from Joliet, said.
Bill Shinn, a senior in political science from Seattle, said it sounds like a plot from the cops.
Everyone will know you’re having a party, Shinn said. That’s ridiculous you’ll run out of beer at 9:30.
Larry Perilloux, a junior in psychology from New Orleans, said the party line could be successful if everything works out.

Everyone’s always looking for a party. Especially if you don’t know that many people its hard to find where things are at, Perilloux said. Now people can just call the number.
Gabe Banks, a freshman from Nashville, said it would be a good idea for everyone trying to find the parties, but he would not advertise his parties on the line.
A bunch of people you don’t know will show up, and what if they trash the place? Banks said. You don’t know who they are to find out how to replace anything.
Carbondale police Chief Don Strom said the police do not need a phone line to find the parties because citizens already report problematic parties. We don’t have trouble finding the parties that are a problem to the community, Strom said. Generally, you don’t have to look for the parties that aren’t acting responsibly.
Strom said he questions how successful the line will be.
(The phone line) has the potential for promoting large parties in violation of the law, Strom said.
Carbondale Mayor Neil Dillard said he did not want to comment until he had more information.
The Party Central party information number, in service Thursday according to Casey, is 5499696.
