Fraternities and sororities will have their hands full as SIUC students interested in going Greek begin rush week today.

We have 75 students who have signed up for formal rush, Jonathan Spencer, Inter-Fraternity Council rush chair, said. Most people who are interested are already signed up, but people can still sign up for Wednesday’s activities.

Spencer said Wednesday’s and Thursday’s activities include tours on and off Greek Row, with groups leaving the Student Center around 6:30 p.m.

It’s a chance for guys to see every house, he said. The tour is a type of overview to see what the house has to offer, its membership personality and just be able to go around and meet everyone.

Fraternities who are participating in the fall rush include:Sigma Pi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Nu, Pi Kappa Alpha, Lamda Chi Alpha, Delta Sigma Phi, Sigma Tau Gamma, Delta Chi, Alpha Tau Omega, Alpha Gamma Rho, Phi Sigma Kappa and Theta Xi.

Preference night, where both participating rushees and the Greek organizations decide who will pledge and to what organization, is scheduled for Friday, Spencer said.

Houses then make their bids for the rushees. A bid is the invitation to join a Greek organization.

The bids can be picked up by the rushees on Saturday at the Inter-Greek Council office, Spencer said.

A 2.3 grade point average is required for both the sorority and fraternity rushes, and freshmen and first year college students need to have been in the top half of their high school class.

Lisa Malanowski, Panhellenic rush chair, said the sororities run their rushes a little differently than fraternities.

Wednesday evening is orientation for everyone, she said. Rushees are taken to chapter houses both on and off Greek row.

Thursday and Friday the rushees meet with the chapter members in the Student Center. And Saturday, we hold preference parties in the evening to find out which chapter matched up with which rushee.

Whereas men can receive numerous bids from different fraternities, women particpating in rush can only recieve one bid from a sorority, Malanowski said.

Five sororities are participating in this rush:Sigma Kappa, Alpha Gamma Delta, Delta Zeta, Psi Omega Chi and Sigma Sigma Sigma.

During rush, application fees for sororities are $25, while fraternities charge $5.
