Republicans disagree with Karrow

By Gus Bode

Patricia Brown’s criticism of Republican Bill Karrow in the Friday, September 15 Daily Egyptian is, without question, justified. By taking our tax dollars, which he doesn’t need, Karrow does not prove the point he claims to prove. Instead, he merely exposes his own unscrupulous practice. This is ironically unfortunate in the context of what he claims to represent by being a Republican:Mainly, that policy needs revision to reduce waste and fraud.

SIU students should not get the impression that Mr. Karrow’s action represents the beliefs of Republicans on campus or Republicans in general. Like Patricia Brown, I rely on public assistance to complete my education by necessity and not, as Mr. Karrow, by fiat.

Another difference between a Republican like myself and one like Mr. Karrow is that my contention with Clinton’s plans for higher education is not related to the number of tax dollars the President is willing to spend. but is instead directed at the beauracratic structure he plans to create (or add to) and the criteria he will set for financial assistance qualification. Until he makes his agenda much more explicit, I remain unconvinced.

Mr. Karrow may not need to look further than his own backpocket to understand policy, but SIU students would do well not to judge all Republicans by Karrow’s poor example.
