As I sat through the Monday, September 11th press conference held by U.S. Representative Jerry Weller and Bill Karrow, president of the Graduate and Professional Student Council, I could not believe my ears. Both men were telling half truth after half truth about Bill Clinton and his higher education programs. Let’s analyze what both men said.
September 14, 1995
Congressman Weller started his press conference by saying, It is unfortunate that the White House would censor someone who’s beliefs are not politically correct. Yet Mr. Weller supported and amendment to the Labor HHS bill, which would have banned college students from joining organizations that lobby in their interest. Mr. Weller accused the president of playing the politics of Chicken Little and Pinocchio. Yet it is the Congressman who is not telling the truth when he says that student aid will be increased under the GOP budget.
As for Mr. Karrow, he called the Direct Lending program, a big government plan which would cause schools to hire more bureaucrats. He fails to mention that his education is being paid for by a Republican scholarship, paid for by the tax payers. Bill Karrow accused the White House of stifling debate by keeping him off the panel. Yet Mr. Karrow is the reason that there was no student rally after the president’s address. He gave the task of preparing for the Clinton visit over to the administration. Representative Weller and Mr. Karrow were not playing the politics of Chicken Little and Pinocchio, but the politics of Bevis and Butthead.
