SIUC has first homecoming victory in 9 straight seasons

The Saluki football team’s improbable season continued Saturday, as the Dawgs pulled off a Homecoming win defeating Southwest Missouri State in overtime 33-30.

The Dawgs were down 20-0 early in the third quarter, then roared back to score 27 points, and receiver Reggie Fowler scored on a 10-yard pass in overtime to give the Salukis their second Gateway Conference victory in a row.

SIUC head coach Shawn Watson said being behind at the intermission did not bring his ball club down.

At halftime I told our coaches, these guys are not going to lay down, these guys are growing up and these guys are going to find a way to win the football game,’ he said.

Some of the highlights in the Salukis victory include:-The Salukis racked up 469 yards of total offense their best production this season.

-Quarterback Danny Smith threw for 328 yards, his most as a Saluki.

-Wide receiver Jermaine Gray caught his first two touchdowns of the season.

-Running back Coe Bonner rushed for 87 yards in a backup role.

-The Dawgs scored 27 consecutive second half points.

-SIUC won its third consecutive home game for the first time since 1986.

-The victory marked the first time the Dawgs have one two conference games since 1992.

-First Homecoming victory since 1986, when the Salukis beat Northern Iowa 27-24.
