DE advertisement tasteless humor, bordering on racist
October 9, 1995
On Friday, October 6, the Daily Egyptian printed an advertisement on the second page. This advertisement, for the Daily Egyptian itself, consisted of a caricature of an East Asian face, with an apocryphal message from Confucius in broken English.
I am sure the DE’s readers all enjoyed this callous, offensive humor, verging on racism. I imagine they all eagerly anticipate further ads denigrating other groups, including (in no particular order) Christians (Jesus?), Moslems (Mohammed?), African-Americans (Martin Luther King?), women (Susan B. Anthony?), foreigners, gays, the handicapped, dead white males, etc.
Respected figures could be used to promote all kinds of different products; The possibilities are only limited by the imagination of your advertising staff since they are so lacking in judgment, not to mention good taste.
