SIUC exhibit to give student artists exposure

By Gus Bode

An etching of a black and white dog sitting in a surrealistic tree. A drawing of pairs of little girls on a background of words. An acrylic on glass with bright colors, of orange and red make up a head and shoulders of a woman.

This exhibit, 18-pieces of artwork in all, makes up the People’s Choice Art Exhibit in Mitchell gallery at the University Museum.

Gretchen Taylor, president of the Museum Student Group that is sponsoring the event, said the exhibit is a good opportunity for students to put their artwork together for viewing.

It’s a learning experience, as much as getting your name out, Taylor said. Any student from any major was allowed to submit.

Taylor said the art for the competition that hangs on the museum walls had to be two-dimensional, and all entries had to be from SIUC students. Also, the work had to have been completed within the last two years, Taylor said.

She said that the pieces in the exhibit were selected through a jury process. The jury was made up of two faculty members from SIUC and three members of the Carbondale community.

The pieces are juried as to what gets in and what doesn’t get into the show, she said.

Taylor said the artwork will be judged by the public through a ballot system which runs until Friday. She said the exhibit is being judged by the public in an effort to instill fairness.

We (the group) don’t decide, she said. We’re trying to make this thing as fair as possible.

Taylor encourages everyone to vote on the art.

There’s a lot of interesting stuff down there, she said. It’s good exposure for everyone.

The 4th annual People’s Choice Exhibit opened on Nov. 3 and runs through Dec. 1 in the museum. Award winners will be announced at a reception on Dec. 1. Monetary awards will be given to the top three pieces. The amount of the awards has not yet been determined.
