‘Stubblefield’ unplugs Pinch with classic rock

By Gus Bode

Classic rock lovers will get the chance to hear acoustic versions of the Doors, the Grateful Dead and the Beatles Saturday night when the Alton, IL band Stubblefield comes to town.

Stubblefield, holding their first all-acoustic performance, will play original and well-known at Pinch Penny Pub, 700 E. Grand.

Stubblefield’s music has been described as mid-western progressive and a blend of blues, rock and rhythm, guitarist Matt Van Voorhis said.

Voorhis said four of the five band members formed Stubblefield in high school.

We came up with the name Stubblefield in high school, he said. Matt Taul, the singer of the band used to watch a family’s house when they went out of the country, and their name was Stubblefield. We used to practice in their basement.

One day their dog got out of the house and a car hit it and that was the end of Matt watching their house, he said.

Voorhis said he plays by ear but guitarist Bob Oettle reads music as well as plays by ear.

I started playing guitar when I was 11 years old, he said. I hate to admit it but I have learned a lot from Bob about playing guitar.

Voorhis said he started loving music while singing in the car at an early age.

He said Taul comes from the most musical background in the group because Taul’s father, older brother and sister all sing at weddings.

Stubblefield has played in Carbondale four times and Voorhis said they always have fun.

Stubblefield is currently working on their first CD titled Eating Crow.

Eating Crow’ means admitting that your wrong, he said. Half of our original songs are on the new CD.

Stubblefield will play at Pinch Penny Pub Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There will be a $2 cover charge.
