The Undergraduate Student Government meeting tonight is taking a brief respite from their usual hectic schedule with only a few bills to fund student organizations on the agenda, USG officials say.

Scott Pfeiffer, USG chief-of-staff, said tonight’s meeting will move quickly.

There is not much to be expected at the meeting, Pfeiffer said. There are three bills on the floor, and all of them are for student funding. Other than that there is nothing major going on. USG is doing a lot. We got the student phone books out, and we’re working on coupon books for students. But it is very unusual to have nothing really going on with the agenda.

Duane Sherman, USG president, said since this will be the first meeting after fall recess, the schedule is not as busy as it normally is, but there is a lot going on for the group overall.

We really don’t have any substantial business on the agenda, Sherman said. Now is the time for the Senate to settle down a little bit and set some new goals and focuses, and take on some new projects that we can wrap up by the end of this year.

Sherman said one of the main focuses of USG is to finish implementing the joint resolution of student membership on University budget committees.

I talked with President Guyon and he said he didn’t have a problem with it (the resolution), Sherman said. He did say we (USG) have to get the support of all the colleges on campus. I am very optimistic that everything will work out.

The resolution is important because SIU is not scheduled for an enrollment increase until 1999 or later, Sherman said.

We (SIU) may drop enrollment or stay the same for the next few years, but we will not be getting in extra state funding, Sherman said. We are looking at some tight times and we need to be prepared for them.
