Sixty-six SIUC students were awarded Wednesday for their efforts in pursuing knowledge that may someday help them get a job.

University Career Services sponsored a career seminar series throughout the semester for the first time to give SIUC students help in preparing and finding a job, Marilyn Detomasi, assistant director of University Career Services, said.

Detomasi said over 600 SIUC students participated in the seminars, but only the students who participated in six or more seminars received a certificate in the awards ceremony Wednesday night.

Detomasi said there were 37 seminars the students could participate in. from study skills to resume writing.

Students who have finished six seminars have shown that they have the responsibility for their future, she said.

Detomasi said the seminars were for students of all levels from freshman to graduate students.

Phyllis Higgerson, a junior in social work who received a certificate in the ceremony, said she participated in the seminars because she was interested in learning how to fill out a resume.

I have had two other jobs before, but I have never had to fill out a resume, she said.

Ben Jenkins, a junior in marketing, said he felt receiving the certificate would give him an edge finding a job.

The seminars help a lot, he said. They get you organized and help you figure out what to do to get a job. They give you good contacts with people who can help you find a job.

Jenkins said the most helpful seminar for him was the job search, which explains how to look for employement.

Lena Brooks, a senior in social work, said she plans to use the information she learned from her six seminars towards her master’s degree.

The interviewing skills and the job search seminars were the most helpful to me, she said. I think these seminars will help anyone get a good job.

When the students went through six or more seminars the deans of their colleges were notified.

Tom Keon, dean of the college of business administration, said 14 students from his college received certificates.

I came to the ceremony because I feel receiving these certificates gives students another opportunity for competing for jobs, he said. It shows future employers extra incentive by the student.

Detomasi said University Career Services is planning on offering the seminars again next semester.
