Oct. 1, the first of what is to become an annual event was inaugurated. A prominent advocate of general education and core curricula, Dr. Thomas Flynn of Millikin University, was the featured speaker. However, the focal point of the celebration was to honor the professors and graduate student teaching assistants who had been nominated by their respective units as the Outstanding Faculty (or Graduate Assistant) for Teaching Excellence in the University Core Curriculum.

It is my understanding that representatives of the local press media, including the Daily Egyptian, were all invited. Yet to this point in time, nothing has appeared in the Daily Egyptian about this ceremony, nor the award winners.

It would certainly seem to me that this activity is one that surely rates space and publicity in what purports to be an organ of campus news as well as a training vehicle for aspiring journalists. In this day of maintaining a positive public image for the University, and to let students know that both faculty and graduate student teaching assistants have the best interest of the students at heart in presenting an excellent learning experience, it is an egregious oversight to ignore reporting such an event to the University community.
