Two weekend robberies involve SIUC students

Police are investigating two separate armed robberies involving SIUC students that occurred over the weekend, but police do not believe the events are related.

An Abbot Hall resident reportedly was robbed at gun point at 11:51 p.m. Friday outside Morris Library when he was approached from behind by a lone man displaying what the victim described as a small caliber handgun. The man demanded money from the victim, who gave up $120 before the gunman fled.

The other incident involved three SIUC students who said they were robbed at gun point early Saturday while walking in the 600 block of West Freeman Street. Police said the students were approached by three or four men, one of whom displayed a silver-colored pistol and demanded money. The students gave up $19 before the robbers fled.

It is very important to remain calm and be observant in these incidents, SIUC Police Sgt. Frank Eovaldi said. Make lots of mental notes of what the suspect looks like, what they are wearing, jewelry, marks anything that would help identify them to authorities.

Neither Carbondale nor SIUC police were able to provide any further information until later today.
