McCoy reported to leave UCLA

UCLA Bruins center Jelani McCoy reportedly has flunked his most recent drug test and is not expected to rejoin the basketball team soon. McCoy was suspended from the basketball team indefinitely Sept. 29.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported Tuesday that McCoy failed his mandatory drug test and informed UCLA coach Steve Lavin of the news Monday night.

The 19-year-old junior was suspended, along with senior forward Kris Johnson, for violating the school’s athletic department Drug Education and Testing Program for student-athletes. Both reportedly tested positive for marijuana use. McCoy and Johnson have not been allowed to practice with the team or attend any official team functions. Their reinstatement to playing status is contingent upon their passing a series of drug tests and attending drug counseling sessions.

McCoy averaged 10.9 points and 6.5 rebounds as a sophomore for the Bruins, who went 24-8 last year. The team won its third consecutive Pacific-10 title and advanced to the Midwest Regional finals in the NCAA tournament.

McCoy, an shot-blocking force, was expected to be the Bruins’ No. 1 man in the frontcourt this season.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Elvis Grbac and tight end Ted Popson were injured during the second half of Monday’s 13-10 win over Pittsburgh. USA Today and The Kansas City Star reported that Grbac broke his left collarbone in the fourth quarter, and Popson suffered head trauma in the third quarter.

Grbac was driven to the turf by a pair of Steelers with 13 minutes and 36 seconds left in the game. He had completed 16-of-29 passes for 172 yards and ran four times for 35 yards.

Rich Gannon replaced Grbac and helped seal the victory. Gannon hit on all five of his passes for 23 yards and ran 13 yards for a key first down in the final minutes.

Popson was hurt after catching a pass with just under 13 minutes left in the third quarter. He was being tackled by one Steeler when Donnell Woolford came in with a hit near the head. Popson fell to the ground and did not move. The Kansas City medical staff evaluated him for more than five minutes before he was carried off on a stretcher for precautionary measures.

Popson was diagnosed with mild head trauma and a sore neck. He will be further evaluated during the week.

Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilfredo Cordero pled guilty Monday to charges of spousal abuse in connection with a June 11 arrest following a 911 call by his wife. He received a suspended sentence and will not serve any jail time, but he has been ordered to attend counseling for batterers.

His guilty plea came while jury selection for a possible trial was in progress. The 25-year-old Cordero could have served a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.
