Question:When was the last time an America hero came to Carbondale?

By Gus Bode

Answer:It will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday when Oliver North speaks at Shryock Auditorium on the SIUC campus.

Lt. Col. Oliver North is one of America’s greatest living heroes. Few men have ever had the opportunity to do much for their country.

When the Achille Lauro cruise ship was hijacked, it was Oliver North who designed the plan to intercept the hijackers and free the innocent victims aboard.

When the United States set out to bomb the terrorist state of Libya, it was Oliver North who planned the strategy that would eventually cripple Muammar Qaddafi and his regime of terror.

When the others had failed in their attempts to free the American hostages held in Beirut, it was Oliver North who risked his own life by traveling to Iran so that his fellow Americans would one day be released from brutal captivity.

And when members of Congress turned a blind eye to the freedom fighters in Nicaragua, it was Oliver North who took the necessary steps to ensure that the shackles of Soviet communism would not be placed on Central America.

So allow yourself the opportunity to hear from a man who so dearly knows the meaning of patriotism and love of country. Come to Shryock Auditorium Tuesday and see why Oliver North is truly an American hero.
