Pilot in 1989 plane crash speaking at Student Center

Retired United Airlines Capt. Al Haynes, the captain of passenger jet Flight 232 that crashed in an Iowa cornfield in 1989, will visit SIUC Thursday as a part of Aviation Career Day.

Haynes will show a video and slides relating to the crash in which 185 passengers survived and 111 people died. On that flight was Jerry L. Kennedy, an SIUC aviation alumnus, who died in the crash.

The free lecture will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Student Center Auditorium.

John A. Edwardson, president and chief operating officer of United Airlines Corp., will deliver the keynote address at a banquet slated for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Student Center Ballroom D. The banquet is sponsored by the student chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives.

Edwardson will talk about his company’s 10-year relationship with SIUC and new directions for its flight operations internship program.

Tickets for the banquet are $20 for students and $30 for others interested in attending.

The Aviation Management Society is sponsoring a career fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday in the Student Center ballrooms. SIUC graduates from more than 30 companies including American Airlines, Trans World Airlines and United Airlines will talk with students interested in an aviation career.

Aviation Career Day also will include various career expo panels discussing subjects such as Corporate Aviation and General Aviation at 9 a.m., Flying for the major, national and regional airlines at 11 a.m., and Aviation Maintenance at 3:30 p.m.
