Reading the stories would prevent errors

By Gus Bode

If only the Daily Egyptian copy desk would get its act together, I would not be writing this. But they apparently have very little regard for the importance of their work, so I must once again attempt to get the facts out to the public myself.

The Graduate and Professional Student Council has not I repeat NOT reversed its position on the athletic fee. Friday’s headline is DEAD WRONG. If the DE copy desk had actually read Travis DeNeal’s excellent article on the most recent GPSC meeting before writing the headline, this letter would not be necessary. But apparently, reading an 18-inch story is too much work for them to handle.

To make matters worse, the copy desk directed readers to page five for the second half of the story, but the jump page was actually page 13, so the odds are that most people did not even read the part of the story that contradicted the headline.

Speaking as a former editor at the DE copy desk, there is absolutely NO excuse for this kind of sloppiness. In the real world, you would be fired for this kind of gross negligence.

I realize you are still learning students, but for crying out loud, get with it. This is a very important issue on this campus. Getting the word out to the public is hard enough without you throwing a monkey wrench in the process. Please either try harder to provide the public with accurate and professionally presented news in the future or do us all a favor and quit your job.
