While reading through the list of the 12th District Congressional Primary Candidates, I became even more frustrated than usual at the lack of choice that plagues our political system. Not only is it frustrating that we are, for the most part, limited to a two-party system, but it is oftentimes difficult to see a difference between the two parties. For many decades, women struggled against insurmountable resistance for us to have the right to choose our paths in life today. We must continue their battle and encourage intelligent and compassionate people to run for office who will vote to protect a woman’s right to obtain a safe, legal abortion. Also, we must cease with our stagnant political interest and educate ourselves about the issues each candidate supports and opposes. We can no longer assume that the Democrat is a pro-choice and more importantly will vote pro-choice Jerry Costello. Sadly, as evident by many political races, we can no longer assume that there will be a pro-choice candidate. Women, let the politicians know that you expect them to protect your rights and vote for those who will do so or, unfortunately, we can no longer assume that abortion will be a safe and legal option.
