Faculty union should remember students
March 25, 1998
As a student of SIUC, it is hard for me to stomach the whole idea of a faculty union. I thought university professors were professionals in their field, not laborers or craftsman in the need of a union. Have you forgotten why you are even here? You are at SIUC because of the students! We are the reason you have a job. You exist because the University can attract students to the campus. Do you think your actions will help attendance, which is already down from previous years? You are going to unionize yourselves out of a job. Your petty complaining is detrimental to the University.
Now you are complaining about some Nakajo English instructors not having their contract renewed. They were not fired, they reached the end of their contract and were not rehired because of declining enrollment. Is this really a union problem? You want to make it so teachers can never be dismissed or fired without checking with the union first. The Nakajo campus is already in jeopardy of closing. You will just aggravate the situation with this complaint.
The union is also suggesting that they will strike at the end of the spring semester. You don’t even care how this will affect students who plan to graduate in August of this year that need summer classes.

I suggest to the student body that we boycott any instructor that strikes, try to put them out of a job. We don’t need you if you don’t want to teach.
